BRIDGE Housing broke ground last week on an affordable housing community in Bellevue.

The project, located at 1601 120th Ave NE in the Spring District, will include 234 apartments for renters earning at or below 60 percent of the area median income level. That total includes 40 apartments reserved for residents with developmental disabilities.

Plans call for six- and seven-story structures on land provided by Sound Transit, and located within walking distance of a new stop on Sound Transit's 2 Line.

“The groundbreaking of this beautiful new community embodies BRIDGE Housing’s commitment to tackling the affordable housing crisis head-on in areas of high need like Bellevue and throughout the West Coast,” said BRIDGE Housing President and CEO Ken Lombard. “We are grateful to stand shoulder- to-shoulder with dedicated partners at the city, county and state levels, along with business allies like Amazon, to help address this ongoing and urgent challenge.”

GGLO is designing the building, while Exxel Pacific is serving as general contractor and Avenue5 as property manager.

Funding sources included Amazon, the Washington State Department of Commerce, King County, the City of Bellevue, ARCH, Citi as construction lender, JLL as permanent lender, the National Affordable Housing Trust as tax credit investor, among others.

Start of work on the BRIDGE Housing Development coincides with Amazon's announcement of a $100-million investment in affordable housing in Bellevue.

“I’m excited to announce Amazon is committing $100 million to the city of Bellevue to fund high-priority affordable housing initiatives as we break ground on Spring District, one of our largest Puget Sound developments,” said Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer David Zapolsky,. “To date, we’ve helped create or preserve more than 1,400 homes in Bellevue, which increased the city’s number of affordable housing units by 31%. Today’s commitment moves us even closer to our collective goals of securing affordable housing for those in need.”
