Unico Properties LLC and Pinnacle Partners have completed 156 new apartments in Tacoma’s historic Washington Building. The building is being reintroduced to the market as The Astor and has started to lease up. Apartments range from ~450 square-foot studios for ~$1,500 / month to ~1,200 square-foot 2-bedroom apartments for ~$3,260. Many of the apartments have views of Puget Sound, the mountains and the city.
The 18-story building features a marble-clad lobby and terrazzo flooring, a resident cocktail lounge located in a refurbished bank vault, and a penthouse with rooftop deck. Other amenities include a fitness center, theatre room, and co-working in the two-story historic bank space. Later this summer, Jin Jin Matcha, a matcha tea café, will occupy the corner retail space at the building.
The Washington Building was built in 1925 and was the tallest building in Tacoma and second tallest building in the Pacific Northwest at the time. Unico acquired the building in 2016 and began renovations in 2020. To preserve the building’s historic character, Unico worked with the City of Tacoma for the design and achieved landmark status for the building from the National Park Service and City of Tacoma. The Astor is located one block north of another historic high rise office-to-residential conversion by InterUrban Development.
